| D.O. ALMANSA Almansa became a D.O. in its own right in an attempt by the authorities to reduce the size and clout of La Mancha. Of all the bodegas in the region Bodega Piqueras, the producer of our Castillo de Almansa wines, is the most noted. |
| | D.O. LA MANCHA La Mancha is the largest D.O. in Spain and was responsible for vast quantities of nondescript bulk wine in the 1960's. Latterly the region has concentrated on the grape varieties most suited to its hot, dry conditions, namely Cencibel (Tempranillo by a different name) and has introduced modern production techniques enabling it to produce both
good and honest Jovens (young wines) and quality aged wines. |
| | D.O. NAVARRA Navarra has come out of the shadow of Rioja and is now producing some amazing wines itself. The region is forward thinking, and with the help of substantial regional investment is producing quality modern wines. In addition to the established Tempranillo and Garnacha grapes, the region is now producing Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot wines along with many interesting blended wines. |
| | D.O. VALDEPEÑAS Valdepeñas, in the heart of La Mancha, is a go-ahead wine making region, which has seen sales of its Crianza and Reserva increase dramatically. Their aged red wines, made mainly from Cencibel (Tempranillo), show all the warmth of the southern heat and are burnished with American oak. |
| | D.O.C. RIOJA Rioja, the only region in Spain to have gained the higher DOCa status and the best known of Spanish wines, produces some stunning reds. Using predominately Tempranillo grapes, the winemakers have mastered the art of blending these with some or all of the following varieties: Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. |
| | VdlT. De CASTILLA Although not of D.O. status, this region is one to watch. Many of the area’s wines are produced by well know companies from better known regions such as Rioja, as in the case of the “Acantus” range of wines. |
